Join us at our hybrid celebration event on 24 June 2022 (UK multiplier event)

The celebration is part of the Refugee Week 2022 events. Please see the event flyer and programme attached.

In this 3-year project, we at Newcastle University have collaborated with transnational partners and local organisations including N.E.S.T and Action Foundation to develop a web app teaching languages through cultural activities. The ENACT webapp brings culture to life through an innovative task-based digital learning pedagogy offering a real world, interactive learning experience. We co-designed the app with groups of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers and were part of our successful University of Sanctuary application. The app is therefore particularly suitable to promote cultural and linguistic exchange between host and new communities, giving everyone a voice and empowering all language users.

The ENACT webapp is used in 153 countries around the world! We currently have more than 100 user-generated cultural activities from 27 countries in 22 languages.

The event will offer a variety of opportunities to learn about the ENACT web app with demonstrations, talks and a chance to try hands-on activities to learn different languages through culture. Prof Judith Rankin (Newcastle University) will welcome you to our campus. Keynote speakers include Rosie Tapsfield (Newcastle City Council, City of Sanctuary) and Bridget Stratford MBE (North-East Solidarity and Teaching), while Chi Onwurah, MP will be giving a plenary talk.

The hybrid event will be held at the Boiler House at Newcastle University (NE1 7RU) from 10.00am - 4.00pm on Friday 24th June 2022, with registration and refreshments available from 9.45am. Places for in-person attendance are limited. Please register here:
